Global Abortion

Legality and Safety

The Guttmacher Institute conducts research to determine the incidence of abortion at the national, regional and global levels. The Institute has developed a widely published methodology to measure the incidence of the practice in countries where abortion is restricted by law and where the majority of abortions are clandestine and likely unsafe.

Hear From An Expert

Imposing legal restrictions to prevent or impede access to abortion does not reduce the number of individuals who need those services, but it certainly does increase the risk of unnecessary physical and emotional harm from unsafe abortion, and may result in legal sanctions and financial hardship as well.
